C.P. (possibly Countess Portarlington) Switzerland. 1890. Folio. Half calf. 100 pages. 20 pages in manuscript (Copper plate handwriting) and remainder featuring original photographs prints, maps, travel brochures, hotel literature etc. This scarce journal relates to a 6 weeks family holiday from the 28th August 1890 to the 7th October, starting in Abbeyleix and their subsequent travels through the Alps from Switzerland to Italy. The journal, beautifully written by a precocious and intelligent young adult, recounts visits to Lucerne, Davos, Basle, Bellagio and Pontresina and trips on mountain railways on the Rigibahn and Gothard lines. The writings are perceptive and informative and would indicate a wealthy & privileged background, particularly in relation to the expense of a 6 weeks family holiday in the Swiss Alps. Rare
